Jay Martin can make $3 per hour picking bottles and returning them for the deposit. These bottles put his son through summer school, fund after-school activities and pay for medical bills and rent. Martin wakes up at 4 a.m. every morning to bike around collecting recyclables.
Martin is also a convicted felon, and this is the only way he says he can make money. He uses a makeshift trailer attached to a bicycle, which expedites his workflow, but says that competition is a big problem in the recyclable redemption business.
